Ring Topology


In Ring Topology, all the nodes are connected to each-other in such a way that they make a closed loop. Each workstation is connected to two other components on either side, and it communicates with these two adjacent neighbors. Data travels around the network, in one direction. Sending and receiving of data takes place by the help of TOKEN. The network topology in which computer are connected in the shape of a circle without any end point is called ring topology. In-ring topology data is passed from one device to the next device and so on until the data reaches the destination. In the past, the ring topology was most commonly used in schools, offices, and smaller buildings where networks were smaller. 

Function of Ring Topology

* Data is transferred in a sequential manner .

* A number of repeaters are used to transmission is unidirectional.

Advantages of Ring Topology

*It is easy to setup and configure.

* It support high data transmission rate.

* Additional components do not affect the performance of network.

* Each computer has equal access to resource

Disadvantages of Ring Topology

* If one workstation or port goes down, the entire network gets affected.

* Network is highly dependent on the wire which connects different components.

* Each packet of data must pass through all the computers between source and destination.

* It is difficult to detect the errors in this type of network.

* Installation requires careful planning to create a continuous ring.It is used in schools ,colleges, etc.  ,colleges, etc.  Computers  can send messages downstream to others devices A malfunctioning node  or cable break can prevents signals from reaching nodes further along on the ring. Isolating problems can require going to several physical location along the ring.

With the growth in mainframe computing and the need for latency-free communication, Ring networks are here to stay and it might replace Ethernet in the future. The speed of the ring network is on the increase and it will not be a limiting factor for its growth.
